Equine Inventory Survey 2000

Many of you may remember completing a survey about horse ownership in New York State. Results from that survey were released in the fall of 2001. The last survey was in 1988 and the comparison of data by industry leaders found there to be “substantial changes." The information collected measures the contribution of equines to the economy of the state. Data collected included information the number of animals by breed, use, location and type of operation. Also, acreage for equine use, employment data, equine value and related expenses.

Of local interest, Erie County ranked second in the state with 7,200 horses reported. Niagara County ranked 20th out of 58 counties with 3,000 horses reported. The number one county in the state was Saratoga County with 11,800 head reported.
